Scriptures for When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed

Scriptures for When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed

Last week’s post: Feeling Overwhelmed?

I received a lot of positive response to last week’s post about feeling overwhelmed. This week I thought I’d share some scriptures and a few songs that I like for when these emotions strike. It’s always helpful for me to have a list of go-to scriptures that are printed out or have an image of them to refer to in moments of need. I also like having some go-to songs to get me through certain emotions.

Hopefully you will find these helpful too. These are merely a few relevant scriptures and songs—there are many, many more! Feel free to leave a comment below with your own suggestions!

Scriptures for When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed

“From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety” Psalm 61:2 (NLT)

“When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn. Wherever I go, my enemies have set traps for me.” Psalm 142:3 (NLT)

“He gives to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:29-31 (NIV)

“…Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the LORD is your strength!” Nehemiah 8:10 (NLT)

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:9 (NLT)

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” Ephesians 6:10-13 (NIV)

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV)

“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NLT)

“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.” Ephesians 3:16 (NLT)

“We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy” Colossians 1:11 (NLT)

“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13 (NLT)

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:7 (NLT)

Music can be helpful too when you’re feeling overwhelmed

I’ve always felt that music is very calming and healing, especially praise and worship music (read more in this post about how Praise Music is a Spiritual Anti-Depressant). Praise is also a weapon we can use in spiritual warfare. Praise makes the enemy run with his tail between his legs. This can come in handy when you’re feeling overwhelmed because we mentioned last week that sometimes these emotions are due to some spiritual warfare. Below are some songs, along with their lyrics, that have really helped me recently and bring me peace.

LYRICS

VERSE 1:

You will stay true

Even when the lies come

Your Word remains truth

Even when my thoughts don’t line up

I will stand tall on each promise you made,

Let the rest fade away

CHORUS:

There’s a peace far beyond all understanding

May it ever set my heart at ease

Dare anxiety come I’ll remember

That Peace is a promise You keep

Peace is a promise You keep

VERSE 2:

You will stay true

Even in the chaos

Your Word remains truth

Even when my mind wreaks havoc

I will be still for I’ve known all along

My Jehovah Shalom

CHORUS 2:

There’s a peace far beyond all understanding

May it ever set my heart at ease

What anxiety fails to remember

Is Peace is a promise You keep

Peace is a promise You keep

REPRISE:

Peace to a restless soul

Peace when my thoughts wage war

Peace to the anxious heart

Peace when I feel enclosed

Peace when I lose control

Peace when my fear takes hold

Peace to a restless soul

CHORUS 3:

I’ve found peace far beyond all understanding

Let it flow when my minds under siege

All anxiety bows in the presence

Of Jesus the Keeper of Peace

And peace is a promise He keeps

LYRICS

VERSE 1:

My heart a storm

Clouds raging deep within

The Prince of Peace

Came bursting through the wind

The violent sky held its breath

And in Your light I found rest

CHORUS

Tearing through the night

Riding on the storm

Staring down the fight

My eyes found Yours

Shining like the sun

Striding through my fear

The Prince of Peace met me there

You heard my prayer

VERSE 2:

Hope like the sun

Light piercing through the dark

The Prince of Peace

Came and broke into my heart

The violent cross

The empty grave

And in Your light

I found grace

CHORUS 2:

Tearing through the night

Riding on the storm

Staring down the fight

My eyes found Yours

Shining like the sun

Striding through my fear

The Prince of Peace met me there

You’re always there

You hear my prayer

BRIDGE:

Your love surrounds me

When my thoughts wage war

When night screams terror

There Your voice will roar

Come death or shadow

God I know Your light will meet me there

When fear comes knocking

There You’ll be my guard

When day breeds trouble

There You’ll hold my heart

Come storm or battle

God I know Your peace will meet me there

Again and again

POST BRIDGE:

Oh be still my heart

And know

That You are God

Oh fear no evil

For I know

You are here

BRIDGE 2:

And my soul will know

Your love surrounds me

When my thoughts wage war

When night screams terror

There Your voice will roar

Come death or shadow

God I know Your light will meet me there

And my soul will know

When fear comes knocking

There You’ll be my guard

When day breeds trouble

There You’ll hold my heart

Come storm or battle

God I know Your peace will meet me there

  • Bookmark, Print, or Pin this page. Hold onto it—you never know when these scriptures may come in handy. Having several similar scriptures in one place will save you the time of having to go and look them all up in a time of need. You can also save or “pin” the scripture image to reference later.
  • Write a few of these scriptures on an index card. Post it somewhere or keep it handy when you’re feeling overwhelmed so that you can see it often and be reminded of what God’s Word says to bring you some peace.
  • Pick out one or two of these scriptures to memorize. If you know a verse or two by heart, it will come in handy when emotions seem a little out of control, and don’t have a lot of time to spend looking for verses. Speak the scriptures out loud and use them as positive affirmations over yourself.
  • Make a playlist of some songs that bring peace, ease your emotions, and remind you of God’s promises. Pick a few songs and create a playlist on iTunes, YouTube, Spotify, etc. Then when you’re feeling overwhelmed, play the songs.
