You Will Have a Performance Evaluation from God Someday

Have you ever had to do a performance evaluation for a job?  A performance evaluation is an opportunity to be assessed on our contributions to an organization, job or event.  It has the ability to measure the quantity and quality of our work and the extent to which we add benefit.  Well, did you know that we will have a performance evaluation in heaven someday?  One day we will all stand before God and have to give an account for our “performance” on earth.  We will be held accountable to God, similar to doing a performance evaluation with our employers.  Our contributions will be evaluated.  God will assess the quantity and quality of our work and if and how much benefit we added to His kingdom.  When I think about it that way, it’s kind of ominous sounding!

JUDGEMENT/GIVING AN ACCOUNT TO GOD

“He will judge everyone according to what they have done.” Romans 2:6 (NLT)

“So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” Romans 14:12 (NIV)

“For we must all appear and be revealed as we are before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive [his pay] according to what he has done in the body, whether good or evil [considering what his purpose and motive have been, and what he has achieved, been busy with, and given himself and his attention to accomplishing].” 2 Corinthians 5:10 (AMP)

“For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds.” Matthew 16:27 (NLT)

“I said to myself, “In due season God will judge everyone, both good and bad, for all their deeds.” Ecclesiastes 3:17 (NLT)

“God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad.” Ecclesiastes 12:14 (NLT)

To clarify, this is NOT a judgement or performance evaluation for deciding your eternity or salvation.  Rather, this judgement is a performance evaluation to reward you for your works and deeds performed.    Your works and deeds do not get you into heaven—only professing Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior can do that, but they can earn you treasures not only in heaven, but also here on earth (Psalm 27:13, Psalm 31:19, John 10:10).

SALVATION AND HEAVEN BY JESUS…NOT BY WORKS

“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” Ephesians 2:8-9 (NLT)

“Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.” Galatians 2:16 (NIV)

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 (NIV)

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 (NIV)

In general, a performance evaluation can be a bit intimidating.  I’ve had a few in my lifetime.  I recently had one for my college teaching. Continue reading

Crap. I gotta go. I can't find my cell phone anywhere!

Funny Friday:  I can’t find my cell phone

This is the story of my life! 🙂 “Crap. I gotta go. I can’t find my cell phone anywhere!”  My mom sent this image to me after I “lost” my cell phone twice this past weekend when I was with her.  Once I had just handed her my phone to show her something on it, and then 10 seconds later I said, “Crap.  I can’t find my phone.”  A couple of hours later when we were walking around at a plant festival I pulled my phone out of my back pocket; then moments later I started feeling my back pocket for my phone…”Crap.  My cell phone is missing.”  Then I cracked up laughing because I realized that I was holding it in my left hand!  I’m telling you…if my head wasn’t screwed on. 🙂  Maybe somebody has prayed a hedge of thorns around me??

“Look how I’m blocking her path with thorns and building a wall to hinder her, so she can’t find her way.” Hosea 2:6 (ISV)

Adults Can Be Bullies Too

Adults Can Be Bullies Too

Adults Can Be Bullies Too

I’m going to tell on myself this week. 🙂 I had a lesson in dealing with adult bullies and therefore had the opportunity to show my kids a real-life example of how to deal with bullies.  We’ve talked recently about responding to people who offend you and scriptures to help when you feel attacked or persecuted.  Sometimes the best way to respond is not to respond.  However, there are times when a response is helpful and/or necessary.  I felt like I encountered one of those times this past week.

I had an altercation in the parking lot at my son’s school this past week, but it didn’t start there.  To give you some background, there has been a lady that has caused a variety of problems all school year.  In my opinion, she is an adult bully.  I had never talked to her (and honestly didn’t even know her) up until this point.  We see her almost every morning at school drop-off, and we always notice her.

There are a few reasons she stands out.  One reason is that every morning she has a dog that sits in the front seat of the car and barks incessantly with an ear-piercing sound with its head sticking out of the open window.  We can actually hear it while we are driving down the road, even though our windows are up!  She’s also very noticeable because she has driven pretty erratically on occasion—or as my kids would say, “She’s a crazy driver!”  Frequently, she does not follow the school’s drop-off procedure to only drop your kids off at a certain, designated location (so as not to block traffic).  Each morning she instead ignores this sometimes inconvenient procedure, and she drops her kids off at the front door which holds up and blocks traffic behind her prohibiting anyone else from being able to pull in to drop their kids off until she moves out of the way.

Last, but not least, she stands out because she has been known on SEVERAL occasions to honk at drivers in front of her, myself included.  There is a particular route to school that has an intersection where it is extremely difficult to make a left-hand turn during the busy morning traffic.  If she has to wait too long at that intersection she starts honking.  Last week was no different.  I was at the intersection attempting to turn left.  She was in the car directly behind me (I knew because I heard the barking dog!).  Due to the high volume of traffic, I was having a difficult time turning left.

One thing you should also know about me is that I’m a “better safe than sorry” kind of person when driving, especially if I have my kids in the car.  I know this probably irritates some people because I don’t get in a hurry—to me it’s not worth the risk.  I guess to this lady it is worth the risk, because she started honking in a series of small honks at first.  She also kept moving forward acting as if she would hit me with her car if I didn’t hurry up and go.  Then, she proceeded to lay on the horn with a nonstop blast when I refused to rush in front of an oncoming school bus that had briefly stopped at a railroad crossing.  I was getting a bit flustered at this point.  I rolled my window down and waived my hand backward as if to say “stop it!”, and I pulled out after the school bus had passed.  I shook my index finger out the window as I drove on.  You know…kind of a “shame on you” type of move.

I decided right then that I was not going to put up with her bullying any more.  Continue reading

Funny Friday: Humans Still Think I’m Lost

I don’t think I’d ever find this dog!  I think I found the NEW master of hide-and-seek. 🙂

“I have wandered away like a lost sheep; come and find me, for I have not forgotten your commands.” Psalm 119:176 (NLT)

You Have God-Given Gifts

You Have God-Given Gifts

You Have God-Given Gifts

Last week we talked about measuring whether or not we are operating in our gift and how sometimes our frustrations can be indicators.  There were points in my life where I KNOW that I wasn’t using my gifts, and I’m sure of that now because of the frustration that I was experiencing during those times.  I don’t think I fully comprehended that God has given me some gifts that He wants me to use in order to fulfill the calling and purpose that He has placed on my life.  If you are experiencing some frustrations in your job, career or role that you play, maybe you need to start focusing on the God-given gifts placed inside of you and determine if and how they fit into your current roles.  This starts with first and foremost recognizing that you ARE indeed gifted!

I actually changed my major in college because of frustrations and not recognizing my gifts.  At the time, I didn’t even know that it had anything to do with my God-given gifts.  I just knew I was miserable in my classes and couldn’t imagine a life-long career doing something I hated.  I originally majored in Accounting and had imagined myself one day becoming a tax attorney.  Then I started taking some classes for Accounting.  I did well in them, but I absolutely HATED them.  They were so boring to me.  I didn’t enjoy working with numbers.  I much preferred writing papers to filling out a balance sheet.  There was so much paperwork and so little interaction with people.

After researching the career more, visiting with my professors and taking a few classes, I quickly realized that Accounting was not the path for me.  I knew it would not make me happy because I wouldn’t get to do the things I enjoyed most.  Those are the things that I now know as my God-given gifts.  Thankfully, my frustrations guided me away from a career that God never intended for me.  I think if I had known more about my God-given gifts I could have avoided some of that frustration, and I could have saved the time and money of taking classes I didn’t need!

I now know that God has given me gifts.  Continue reading

Funny Friday: Close that bad boy up!

Funny Friday: Close that bad boy up!

Funny Friday: Close that bad boy up!

I laughed out loud when I saw this on my daughter’s math worksheet that she brought home this week.  I love this kid!  This is completely her personality!  How do you close a shape?  Well, OBVIOUSLY you just add a line to close that bad boy up!

“In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David, that is fallen: and I will close up the breaches of the walls thereof, and repair what was fallen: and I will rebuild it as in the days of old.” Amos 9:11 (Douay-Rheims Bible)

Are You Operating in Your Gift?

Are You Operating in Your Gift?

Are You Operating in Your Gift?

This past weekend I had the wonderful honor and opportunity to speak at a local women’s conference.  Thank you so much to those of you who prayed for me and for the conference.  It was a success!  I continue to pray and believe that the words the ladies received will sink down into their hearts and produce some great things in their lives.  God’s Word doesn’t return void! (Isaiah 55:11)  I spoke about discovering your God-given gifts and purpose.

God has been really working on me over the past several years to show me my own gifts and talents and to give me a glimpse of some of the things that He’s calling me to do.  I still don’t know my WHOLE purpose in life, but I’m definitely seeing God reveal bits and pieces of it to me little by little.  I’m not sure if we really ever figure this out all at once anyway.  My sister told me the other day that if God told me everything He wanted me to do right now, I’d more than likely just reply “Heck NO! I’m not doing that!”  She’s probably right.  I tend to be reluctant a lot when God calls me to do something new that might be a little out of my comfort zone.  Sometimes I can be a little stubborn. 😉

I shared with the ladies at the conference that I’ve always said my whole life that I would NEVER be a teacher.  I’ve learned that you have to be careful of what you say you will never do because God has a sense of humor.  Little did I know when I swore off teaching, that it is exactly what God had gifted me to do.  Now when I look back I can see that it was there all along.  I just didn’t recognize it.  Unfortunately, I think this is true of a lot of people and their gifts.  They don’t know they’re gifted or they don’t recognize them for a number of reasons.  Some people have just never been taught.  My goal is to change that—at least in my sphere of influence.  Now this is something that I teach in both my college classes and at Glory House, the women’s restoration home where I teach.  I’d like to continue some of this teaching on the blog here too from time to time because you can’t start operating in your gift until you know what your gifts are.

Discovering my gifts and purpose started for me several years back.  Continue reading

Funny Friday: Communication Breakdown

Communication Breakdown?

Funny Friday: Communication Breakdown

Hmmm.  I think there might have been a communication breakdown with the construction of this house.  I guess this is what happens when two teams don’t talk?

“But they did not listen or pay attention; instead… They went backward and not forward.” Jeremiah 7:24 (NIV)
