Prayer for Your Finances

Prayer for your finances...

Prayer for Your Finances

For some, Christmas can be a time of excitement, fun, and generosity. Unfortunately though, for others it can be a time of worry and anxiety due to finances. Sometimes the end of the year, corresponding with Christmastime, comes with extra expenses. Then on top of that, purchasing gifts can add up…especially if you have numerous events like family celebrations, work parties, church events, Secret Santa gift exchanges, outreaches or charitable giving that requires some of our finances, etc. Sometimes it can be stressful figuring out where the money is going to come from for all of that.

The wise thing to do would be to budget for the end-of-year expenses and Christmas giving. It’s a good idea to allocate or set aside a little bit of money each week or each month for this purpose. Regrettably, many of us haven’t exercised this kind of wisdom (or unexpected events and expenses have prohibited us from doing so). Because of this, when we don’t use wisdom sometimes we have to pay the consequences of poor decision making. That being said though, God still cares about our finances. He cares about the details. Additionally, even when we mess up He still cares about helping us.

Several years ago, I learned a few strategies for praying over finances. With Christmastime being a stressful time for finances for many people, I thought this might be a good opportunity to share some of those strategies and a Prayer for Your Finances. These strategies and prayer work anytime though–they don’t just apply at Christmas!

Remind God of His promise provision

God is our provider. We can approach God boldly with His promise of provision. Philippians 4:19 promises us that God will supply all of our needs. Jesus also gives us an example to pray for our needs in the Lord’s Prayer. Moreover, one of God’s names is Jehovah Jireh, which means “the Lord will provide”. All throughout scripture you will see countless examples of the Lord’s provision. When praying over your finances, remind God (put Him in remembrance) of His promise of provision.

Put me in remembrance; let us argue together; set forth your case, that you may be proved right.” Isaiah 43:26 (ESV)

“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 (KJV)

“Give us this day our daily bread” Matthew 6:11 (KJV)

“Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the LORD will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”” Genesis 22:13-14 (NLT)

“God is my helper! The Lord is the provider for my life.” Psalm 54:4 (GW)

Take a look at this hilarious short video clip of Joe McGee when he was at a point in his life where he was frustrated financially and decided to put God in remembrance of His promise of provision.

Pray for wisdom over your finances

If we want to be blessed financially, we need to use wisdom where our finances are concerned. We need to learn to be wise with our money. Pray for God to give you wisdom over your finances…to make good decisions regarding money and to keep you from making foolish decisions.

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” James 1:5 (NLT)

“For wisdom is more profitable than silver, and her wages are better than gold.” Proverbs 3:14 (NLT)

“How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver!” Proverbs 16:16 (NLT)

Pray for supernatural favor over your finances

Sometimes we just need a little bit of favor or some extra “oomph” over our finances. Did you know that favor belongs to you? It’s part of your covenant with God. Favor is part of the package deal—it comes along with your salvation. We have many blessings, the blessings of Abraham (Galatians 3:13-14, Deuteronomy 28:1-14), that are ours through Christ. Because of Christ we have the favor of God and can invite that favor into our lives and circumstances, including but not limited to our finances. You just need to ask…after all, ‘You have not because you ask not’ (James 4:3).

“Surely, LORD, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.” Psalm 5:12 (NIV)

And I will give these people such favor in the sight of the Egyptians that when you go, you will not go empty-handed.” Exodus 3:21 (HCSB)

“The LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Furthermore, the man Moses himself was greatly esteemed in the land of Egypt, both in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people.” Exodus 11:3 (NASB)

“The Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they gave them what they asked. And they stripped the Egyptians [of those things].” Exodus 12:36 (NLT)

“The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”” Luke 1:28 (NIV)

“But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.” Galatians 3:13-14 (NLT) (see also Deuteronomy 28:1-14)

“Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread.” Psalm 37:25 (NLT)

“Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry, but those who trust in the LORD will lack no good thing.” Psalm 34:10 (NLT)

Pray for increased channels of blessing

My pastor has taught for years that blessing, including and especially financial blessing, comes through channels. When God wants to get money to us, it doesn’t just fall out of the sky or appear out of nowhere. It comes through channels…through work, through exchange (of services, goods, or intellectual property), through people, etc. Sometimes we just need an extra channel to be opened up for money to flow through. We can pray for increased channels of blessing. I often like to pray Revelation 3:7-8, for God to open doors and/or ideas for additional channels of income (and for the wrong doors to be shut).

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows** of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!” Malachi 3:10 (NLT) **Note: Windows are a channel for light, air, etc. to go through.

“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.” Revelation 3:7-8 (NIV)

Pray for true prosperity

My definition of true prosperity is to have what you need at the time you need it and to always have more than enough. True prosperity is being blessed so that you can be a blessing to others. Pray that God will bless your finances in such a way that your own needs are met and that you also have enough left over to be able to help others.

“God can give you all you need. He will give you more than enough. You will have everything you need for yourselves. And you will have enough left over to give when there is a need.” 2 Corinthians 9:8 (NLV)

“Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (NLT)

“And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'” Acts 20:35 (NLT)

“When I fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up afterward?” “Twelve,” they said. “And when I fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers did you pick up?” “Seven,” they said.” Mark 8:19-20 (NLT)

Prayer for Your Finances

Lord,

I praise you that you are my Provider! Thank you for providing and meeting ALL of my needs according to your riches in glory through Christ Jesus.  Today I ask for wisdom over my finances, for supernatural favor over my finances and for increased channels of blessing.  Please give me ideas and open doors that no one can close, and close the wrong doors. I pray for and thank you in advance that I will always have what I need at the time I need it and that I will always have more than enough.  Thank you that you are blessing me so that I can be a blessing to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
